The best of both worlds
Why would you use a preamp plug-in if you've already recorded through a preamp I hear you say? Modern preamps have been designed to deliver a highly-transparent tone, imparting very little or no tonal characteristics in favour of providing a blank canvas on which you can add your processing.
During the golden age of analog production and equipment, the nature of the preamps meant that each one would deliver a certain character, resulting in a particular "sound". Subtly enhancing your sound with desirable distortion, harmonics and tone, it became common practice to drive preamps as part of the creative process to create rich and unique tones. Now available as a virtual plug-in in your DAW, you can directly inject the characteristics of vintage preamps into your tracks, even after they've been recorded, giving you the flexibility of both worlds.
Take a closer look
Combining the finest German-designed preamp with an EQ of the same era into one seamless channel strip offers a myriad of flexibility for any instrument in your mix. V76-Pre's EQ is modelled on an extremely rare Telefunken EQ, modified to include musically-tuned low and high-shelf filters. With 10dB of boost onboard, these are ideal for shifting the frequency tilt of your sound, quickly adding brightness or fatness without too many parameters obscuring your creativity. An additional multi-mode high-pass filter is included to help remove excessive subfrequencies, keeping your signal pristine. Switchable between 80, 300 and 380Hz or set to bypass to leave your signal unfiltered, this simple dial can be a quick solution to eliminate room rumble in a microphone recording or to filter out the excessive lows in your bass drum.
Unique to the other preamp offerings from Arturia, V76-Pre's circuitry is vacuum tube-based. Driving the input gain of the V76-Pre delivers a warm and harmonically-rich soft-clipping stage, cementing the vintage nature of the preamp. Versatile enough to work with just about any instrument in your mix, the V76-Pre shines on lead vocal performances, giving them enough character to sit in a mix and blend with the background instruments, adding warmth and roundness to bass guitar to keep the thump of your low-end without getting muddy or drum room microphones to add a touch of crunch to the top-end.
Vintage tone, modern twist
Trends may come and go but for musicians and producers, the only constant is the desire to get the best sound for your projects. As technology improves and makes producing and creating music even easier than ever, Arturia's V76-Pre puts one of the most sought-after, rare console preamps into your DAW and enhances it for the demands of modern production techniques.
Although released 70 years ago, the unmistakable sound of the V76-Pre is unequalled. Imparting the character and warmth that hardware is renowned for, nothing quite sounds the same, so why not have the next best thing at a fraction of the price, direct in your DAW?
Creating a plug-in which delivers an identical sonic signature is only the beginning of Arturia's goal, leading them to implement a range of smart addendums to bring the V76-Pre into the 21st century.
Continuous controls have been implemented in favour of the traditional stepped parameters, letting you mix between the lines and improve the accuracy of your settings. Perfect for dialling in just the right amount of input drive for subtle overtones or for setting the level of your EQ frequency.
Eliminating the traditional manual adjustments, V76-Pre now includes automatic gain controls to perfectly match the input and output levels depending on your settings, ensuring you hear only the tonal changes rather than any volume changes in your tone.
Taking advantage of digital DAW production, Arturia includes left/right and mid/side stereo processing. Process left, right, mid or side channels independently with individual control over drive, output and EQ settings for more precise control over your tone.
Cracking the code
At the start of the recording revolution, the Telefunken V-series preamp was ubiquitously known as the 'Big Daddy' of recording preamps, and with good reason. With a heritage of creating the most authentic and realistic emulations of vintage keyboards and synthesizers, Arturia has entered the realm of capturing the most sought-after recording gear as plug-ins for your DAW. This pairing has re-revolutionized recording for modern players to experience vintage equipment with indistinguishable results.
Lending its name from the rich, huge tone it omitted, the Telefunken V-series preamp was quickly integrated into Abbey Road studios and was there to capture the most pivotal point in its history. Heard all over the self-named album by The Beatles (also known as "The White Album"), it's easy to see why every recording studio wanted to adopt this traditional broadcast preamplifier.
Found in Question De Son, a recording studio in Paris France, Arturia were able to study an original pair of V76/V80 preamps. Both units had been in active use for 70 years, making them the ideal candidate to use as the basis for this plug-in emulation.
Powered by technology
Using proprietary modelling algorithms, Arturia V76-Pre can recreate the iconic hardware down to the component parts to create unrivalled realism and immersion. Unmatched in analog emulation, Arturia V76-Pre is powered by TAE and Phi technologies. TAE offers component-level modelling to accurately present the characteristics and behaviour of the hardware, whilst Phi's state-of-the-art physical modelling brings the acoustic properties into the virtual world for hyper-realism. The result is truly a next-level sound that is indistinguishable from the original to add to your productions.
