An unsung legacy
BA-1 is a contemporary take on a cult classic, the 1982 analog synth, which although resembled a toy, produced powerful and now classic sounds. Despite its humble appearance, it made a significant impact on music history, leaving its unique sonic footprint across various genres. Over the last two decades, Sweden's most successful pop producers have relied on it for bubbly synth textures. Additionally, it was a prominent feature of 1990s digital dance hall music and highly favoured by the indietronica community due to its raw lo-fi quality. Never before has this synthesizer been precisely replicated in software form until now.
The sound you know, enhanced
True to Baby Audio's motto, "it's an evolution, not an emulation," the BA-1 has been modelled with the utmost precision before upgrading it with new and innovative features.
BA-1's sound generators have been meticulously modelled to recreate the raw grit and drift that made the original hardware so beloved. Highlights include the triangle and PWM waveforms, which are perfect for classic 80s dub sounds. Compared to the original, BA-1 features a second oscillator that offers greater flexibility in sound design. Notably, FM capabilities have been introduced, adding complexity and depth to the classic analog subtractive architecture - this feature alone offers more sound design options than the hardware counterpart.
Several upgrades can be found throughout BA-1, including the 24dB low-pass filter, which has been analog-modeled to offer a gritty bite and self-oscillates as it approaches the 95-100% range, in the same way as the original hardware. The envelope, which exhibits the same quirky side effects as the original hardware, enables users to shape the sound with greater precision. Additionally, BA-1's attack time can be host-synced to your DAW's BPM, allowing for sweeping sounds that rise in perfect sync with your music.
For a unique and authentic synth experience, BA-1 simulates the battery-powered design of the original device. Due to the inefficiencies of battery power, the original synth caused strange sonic artefacts as the battery wore down. We have simulated this behaviour and even exaggerated it for a better effect, demonstrating pitch fluctuations, noise, and distortion, the further down the battery level goes.
Augment your sound with onboard FX
As experts in the world of effects, we have dedicated a remarkable FX section to BA-1 that is worthy of its own plugin. With influences drawn from budget 1980s rack hardware, the effects chain captures the nostalgic lo-fi sounds of home studio recordings from the era. In BA-1, the effects are more than just an add-on, they're an intrinsic part of its sonic signature. The overdrive feature is an analog-modeled distortion, available in two modes: 'Circuit' models the effect of circuit bending the original hardware, while 'OD' models an 80s overdrive pedal.
A simple EQ is included with the Tone dials, offering shelving filters for fine-tuning the brightness or darkness of the sounds that BA-1 produces. The vintage-inspired digital delay, reverb, and chorus combo has been impressively recreated in BA-1 using the inspiration from the era's budget rack hardware. Incorporating all three effects at once, and creating anything less than an epic sound will be next to impossible.
Enhanced design for DAWs
Improving on the basic, toy-like design of the hardware original, BA-1 has been designed with modern players in mind. Instead of the original Monophonic mode, BA-1 has been ported with Polyphonic mode and velocity sensitivity for more expressive and creative performance capabilities. While the original speaker was by no means high-quality, it was an integral part of the hardware. Producing a pleasant lo-fi sound, Baby Audio have modelled the sound, taking into account its limitations to give you the option to create a sound which feels like it's moving air!
This has all been wrapped in a like-for-like, fully-resizable interface replication with three colour modes to choose from. BA-1 lets you switch between grey, blue, purple and orange colour modes to keep things fresh. Click right here on the coloured squares to preview the options.
Beauty in simplicity
Achieving the perfect balance between simplicity and tunability, BA-1 is surprisingly tweakable. Each parameter has been finely tuned to create the perfect sweet spot, providing a rewarding and fun programming experience that inspires the creation of countless new patches.
