The first software instrument endorsed by Oberheim himself
After the successful release of the OB-E, word spread to the creator of the instrument himself, Tom Oberheim. So impressed by the sound and design that a collaborative effort was made between GForce and Tom to refine the powerful foundation of the instrument to capture the myriad of nuances and component tolerances to add the final piece of magic. The result would be a software instrument that carried the originator's full endorsement. Working under the guidance of the original designer, the GForce OB-E was enhanced with a more precise detune range, an addition of a 'Vintage' knob and more musical instabilities to create a truly authentic analog-modelled experience.
What's new with OB-E
What may be more apparent than any other updates is the new addition of a Drum Mode with OB-E. This Drum Mode allows each SEM to be triggered by a dedicated key and with 10 drum kit presets included, you have access to a wonderful analog-esque drum machine for unique percussion in your music. An additional 100 patches have been included to highlight the wide range of tonal flexibility within OB-E and a new matrix reverb gives your sound more depth and character than previously.
Whilst these are all features that can be manipulated, it's what's under the hood that is most impressive. The collaboration with Tom Oberheim himself has lead to a more refined sonic experience, with a more natural detune parameter and more authentic analog-modelled inaccuracies within the circuit for a more genuine playing experience.
Authentic and augmented
Expertly engineered, the OB-E has been painstakingly emulated to ensure sonic authenticity, whilst adding numerous functions that improve customisation, flexibility and workflow. Mono, Mono Legato, Poly, Unison modes are all available to give a wide range of playing styles to suit any performance or song, while Split keyboard mode allows you to split the lower notes into SEMs 1- 4 and the higher notes into SEMs 5-8. This provides you with the perfect synthesizer for live performances, allowing you to creatively express yourself with a huge range of flexibility and in-depth parameter editing. Additionally, SEM 8 can be allocated to the sequencer, giving 3-way playback possibilities within a single patch. An all-new VCO3 has been included to double as an audio-rate LFO per SEM to add more sound-design exploration that takes your music to the next level.
In order to keep up with the modern-day producer and musician, a host of performance features have been included to optimise your workflow, such as velocity, polyphonic and MBE controls. This allows you to express your creativity with your true intention with no barriers or limits that stifle your imagination.
Fast and efficient editing
Whilst remaining sonically accurate to the original, the Gforce OB-E allows for simple and easy parameter editing and sound programming when compared to the original eight-voice synth. Instead of editing eight individual SEMs, the OB-E provides a number of simple and easy editing solutions such as ZOOM that places each SEMs front and rear panels side by side, GROUP that enables global SEM parameter changes that apply to all eight simultaneously and OFFSET which functions the same as GROUP, but retains the relative positions of each parameter.
Once you have crafted a sound that you're happy with, you can copy, save and paste parameters per SEM or save the global preset for recall in later sessions. The intuitive preset browser allows for quick and easy recall of previous patches through a sophisticated category folder with tags to select your favourite sounds.
Expansive sequencer and stereo delay
Going beyond what was possible on the hardware, an extremely comprehensive and creative eight-step sequencer has been included to provide flexible and interesting rhythmic phrases. Featuring two modes, the sequencer can be as complicated or as simple as you want. The first mode takes inspiration from the original mini sequencer. When in SEM8 mode, the sequencer will trigger SEM8 while allowing all other SEMs to be played as normal. In All mode, when the keyboard playback settings are set to Continuous, the sequencer will cycle through all the SEMs, starting with the SEM determined by the setting of the Start SEM knob. Here, you can create evolving and complex sequences where each SEM can have a unique sound to create fresh and interesting soundscapes.
For additional control, an all-new analog delay has been implemented. Sync to your DAW host's tempo, add ping-pong delay with the crossover switch, control the feedback, mix and delay time with the dedicated functions, and most interestingly, you can choose to affect either the Lower SEMs, Upper SEMs, or both simultaneously. This gives you a huge range of sonic capabilities, especially when paired with the eight-step sequencer to create truly out-of-this-world sounds.
Organised library of sounds
Highlighting what OB-E is capable of, a collection of more than 700 factory presets is included. Designed by a team of world-class sound engineers, each of the presets displays how beautiful OB-E can sound. For studio engineers working with restricted time allowances, these presets are ideal for getting you up and running in a session fast. Designed to fit within the mix with ease, you can dive into the creative aspect of your composition with peace of mind knowing your sounds will work in the mix. Each Patch has been categorised and tagged to enable easy and quick selection from the librarian. The user can navigate through the categories and Patches using their computer keyboard’s arrow keys for easy auditioning.
