Analog-modelled oscillators
At the heart of B.I.T is the dual oscillator section. 11 different waveforms are made up of eight standard shapes comprising square, sine, triangle, half-sine, sinesaw and more as well as pink, white and tuned noise. The oscillators have been meticulously modelled from a range of vintage synthesizers to deliver an exacting tone that adds the signature flavour of hardware equipment to your mixes. Additionally, a drift function is included to simulate pitch drift on vintage equipment with the degradation of parts over time.
Plenty of modulation options are available with B.I.T, with Oscillator 1 syncable to Oscillator 2 as well as pulse, frequency and ring modulation. Both oscillators are also capable of self-modulation via the onboard feedback control, serving to add another layer of searing distortion to your tones.
Authentic analog-modelled filters and LFOs
Comprised of two identical filters with several different routing options, B.I.T lets you dial in the classic filter sounds of revered hardware synthesizers. The signature resonance, grit and character can be found in spades in B.I.T, letting you discover how the sounds of your favourite classic dance records were produced. Configurable in either Serial, Split Osc (parallel) or Split Noise, the signal path of your filters can be tailored to find the perfect sound for your mix. Not content with providing you with several routing options, Rob Papen B.I.T features several different types of filters, including two low-pass modes, high-pass, band-pass, notch and comb filtering. Each filter features a switchable cut-off slope from 12 to 24dB/Oct to alter the response and aggression of your tonal shaping. When used in combination with the Q (resonance) control, you can achieve a wide range of sounds from subtle tone shaping and removal of excessive lows or highs to extreme filtering with destructive qualities to sharpen the edge of your music.
Essential to the sound of vintage hardware synthesizers, B.I.T contains two LFOs to help create your tone. One LFO is dedicated to pitch, whilst the second can freely be assigned to the modulation matrix. With six waveforms to choose from, multiple modes, speed sync and phase controls, the freely assignable LFO onboard B.I.T is capable of anything from subtle thickening to full-blown oscillation.
Add exciting, evolving tones with the onboard arpeggiator
Perhaps stepping slightly outside the realm of vintage analog equipment, B.I.T features a 16-step arpeggiator. With up to 13 different play modes, the onboard arpeggiator offers something for everyone. With a full four octave range and comprehensive control over a wide range of settings including velocity, tune, slide, swing and tie, you can create rhythmic synth tones to add movement and energy to your track. Found in many Rob Papen synths, B.I.T's arpeggiator also includes a Velocity/Key dial. This special control lets you tell B.I.T what source to listen to when creating each step, either the velocity level within the plug-in or the velocity of your manual keypress on your MIDI keyboard. A mix of both can of course be done by setting the dial to 50/50. Whilst this control may be a small part of a larger equation, it's ideal for letting B.I.T perform the arpeggiation based on the performance, letting you create more engaging, emotive pieces with dynamics and fluidity.
The onboard modulation matrix can also be assigned to the Free control over your arpeggiator, allowing for complex and evolving sequences in your productions. Ideal for live sound designers, modulating sources within your arpeggiator can lead to unexpected and unpredictable behaviour, keeping your audience engaged with your music for longer.
Customise your tone
Offering the tools to carve your sonic signature, Rob Papen's B.I.T includes several effects to help transform monotonous and dry sounds to exciting and expansive soundscapes. A phaser and flanger share parameters as do delay and reverb, whilst the chorus is provided with its own set of controls. Whilst this may mean you cannot engage all five effects simultaneously, the depth of manipulation with each effect is more than enough to add an extra layer of texture to your sound design.
Although B.I.T is a virtually-modelled analog synthesizer, the addition of the modulation matrix offers flexibility even within the domain of the onboard effects. Modulating effects parameters on a delay, reverb or chorus can result in some extraterrestrial sounds that take your listener to another realm and could be the sound you're looking for in your cinematic film or TV score.
Browse, save and recall presets
A staple amongst Rob Papen's virtual instruments and effects are immaculate presets, letting you explore the capability of your plug-in instantly. B.I.T is no different, comprising over 950 presets to discover the sound design potential, helping you to feel inspired to get creative as soon as your synth is booted up, every time. Helping you to find the right sound for your production, quickly, B.I.T employs an intuitive folder system, each containing up to 256 presets. Each folder offers a different parameter to search for a specific sound with, offering Type, Tempo/Feel and Timbre search options you will be able to quickly find a sound to audition in your project. Once you've found a sound that resonates with your tastes, simply save this to your Favourites folder and recall it in any future session you may need, helping to supercharge your workflow in the studio, saving time on scrolling through endless lists of presets and instead, capturing the lightning in a bottle moment in your sessions.
