The PRS Custom is the PRS guitar. Debuting in 1985 at the Winter NAMM show, the Custom quickly gained a reputation for its high quality and exceptional playability, entering mass production as the Custom 24 in 1987.
It’s responsible for launching the PRS brand from an almost one-man show in the early 1980s, to the guitar manufacturing goliath it is today. As Paul’s first unique guitar design (that wasn’t a special order for an artist), he aimed to split the difference between the popular guitars of the two existing titans: Fender and Gibson.
This resulted in a fretboard with a 25” scale length, a rounded guitar body that’s accented with double cutaway horns, and unique electronics underneath humbucking pickups. In a market that was crowded with extreme metal-oriented shapes, the PRS Custom stood head and shoulders above the rest.
On top of these eye-catching design elements, the PRS Custom demonstrated Paul’s capacity for innovative engineering. Its electronics eschewed the traditional tone knob for a “sweet” switch that emulated the high-end cut of long stage cables. Locking tuners were fitted as standard, and a completely redesigned tremolo bridge allowed for much smoother vibrato action and tuning stability.
As for the name, Paul originally presented two models in ‘85: the Paul Reed Smith Guitar and the Paul Reed Smith Custom – The main difference lying in the Custom’s maple top and fingerboard inlays - two features that have become hallmarks of PRS Guitars today.
The PRS Custom guitar is the original model of the brand. It’s known for its premium violin carve, patented Gen III tremolo system, and proprietary 85/15 pickups. First seen in 1985, the Custom 24 has been a top seller ever since, used by many renowned artists and musicians.
The PRS Custom’s long running success demonstrates why PRS Guitars are so special. Paul’s commitment to capturing the magic of vintage instruments, combined with his innovative hardware to improve playability and tone result in truly exceptional guitars.
The PRS Custom 24 guitar is the most popular PRS model. Since its launch in 1987, the Custom 24 has been a consistent top seller and has been used by countless touring musicians and industry professionals. And not just artists! The Custom 24 is the instrument that many hobbyists aspire to own.
